One of the most difficult parts of teaching is time management. It is imperative that students are busy and engaged throughout class to avoid classroom discipline issues. No matter how hard you try, there are days when your class ends way too early! This is a huge problem because what do you do? Well, here are some quick and easy websites that offer educational interactive games to access at a moment’s notice. We picked these websites because you can make the interactive games a whole class activity. This way students can stay in their spots and you can quickly fill up those last few minutes with an educational activity. These can all be done on a SmartBoard, interactive board, or even an ordinary projector because you or a student will do the clicking. This looks much better than “Heads Up Seven Up” if an administrator pops in. Oh and best of all, these are all FREE!
Every grade level, every subject! This website is glorious for interactive games that use critical thinking skills. Want to see if students can fix the U.S. debt? Practice their Spanish at a “restaurant”? Have young students practice syntax? Well, this site has it and SO MUCH more! This site is also a really important one to have in your back pocket if you are subbing and the teacher did not leave the students enough work. Link
This is a huge website that offers tons of games, quizzes, and puzzles. It is geared more towards the middle and elementary grades. It does offer interactive games and puzzles for Math, Social Studies, and English, but it heavily favors Science. It even divides science into four categories: life science, human body, earth and space, and physical science. The flow chart games are our top pick because they offer a terrific visual and review. The vocabulary games are also excellent for last minute review! LINK
Phet Interactive Simulations
This site is amazing for Science and Math of all grade levels. They even categorize the simulations and interactive games by grade level or subject. These are very interactive and engaging. The best part is that you can stream the activities or download them if your internet has a mind of its own. LINK
Magic Tree House Mission Game
This website is for older elementary and middle school, English and Social Studies classes. These popular books come alive in this fun and interactive game. You can play without a login, but we would advise that you do have an account. It can keep track of your class’s progress throughout the year and help with keeping students engaged. The mission game takes the class all over the world asking questions about history, geography, and other information that they have read either in the Magic Tree House series or in class. LINK
Cool Math Games
Cool Math Games is a website that is filled with tons of interactive games, but be careful, not all are educational. This site is geared towards ALL GRADES. It is important that you play around on this site beforehand, so you understand which games best fit your needs and you know how to play! Here are our top picks within the website:
This starts off easier, but gradually becomes harder. This is really great for critical thinking in math and working with lines and angles.
This is perfect for an Economics class! Students run a coffee shop by purchasing supplies, creating recipes, setting prices, and trying to sell to customers. It would work well for a supply/demand lesson.
Crazy Taxi M-12
Teaching multiplication? This game is for you! It will tell you to crash into cars as you are driving down the road that are multiples of 2, 5, 7, 10, etc… It is a fantastic quick review for the multiplication table.
