What It Is:
ABCmouse is an online learning program for Preschool through Grade 2. There are over 850 lessons available in the areas of math, reading, the world around us, music, and art with activities ranging from songs, online books, games, puzzles, and printable pages as well as an interactive zoo and farm.
Why We Like It:
It has a lesson builder for teachers and is standards based. This allows teachers to use this program to determine grade level readiness as well as to progress monitor, so there are some real education related functions beyond just activities for lessons. There is an English Language Learning Academy portion that is helpful for any ESL/ELL teachers or for those teachers with a high ESL/ELL population. We also love that ABCmouse is able to back their product with RESEARCH that shows this program accelerates learning.
6 Ways to Use It:
1. Whole group (Class):
As you are presenting a lesson to the class, you can incorporate an activity from ABCmouse. Their songs or online books are a great addition to your lesson/PowerPoint presentation. If you have an Interactive Whiteboard any of their activities are excellent for student engagement.
2. Small Group (Stations):
There are several ways you can incorporate their lessons into your stations. You could have groups of students rotate between stations with one station centered around a computer or if you have tablets each student at the station can access ABCmouse through their own tablet. The progress tracking they offer allows you to assign different students specific lessons, so you can control/monitor what each student accomplishes and really individualize their learning.
3. Individual (Computer Lab):
This may be the most popular way we have seen teachers use ABCmouse. This allows students to work at their own pace and through the teacher portal we mentioned above you can track each individual student’s progress. This is excellent if you have already done the teaching piece and want to allow students practice or even a great plan for a day you have a sub.
4. Intervention Re-teaching Tool:
We LOVE ABCmouse for this. Differentiation is big right now and ABCmouse is the perfect tool to re-teach standards that a student missed. After you assess which standards a student has mastered and which they need more practice with, you can set them up with the lessons tied to that standard on ABCmouse. Then reassess afterwards to make sure they have shown proficiency.
5. Intro or Follow-Up:
ABCmouse is great for introducing a new topic and letting students explore (like in the computer lab), or for doing a follow-up activity after a topic has been presented. For instance if you are teaching a unit on mammals, you could take a students on a virtual field trip through the zoo, and ask them to identify which animals are mammals.
6. ELL Students:
ABCmouse’s English Language Learning Academy can really help to bridge the language gap some ELL/ESL student have. It helps children learn in a more natural way by using speaking and listening and once those skills are mastered moving on to reading and writing. It is great as a supplemental resource or even as a core program. We highly recommend checking out these lessons.
